Dr. Rubana Huq is a businesswoman, a poet, a motivational speaker and currently the Vice Chancellor of Asian University for Women, an international university in Bangladesh. She is the immediate past President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), and she was also the first female occupant of the post in four decades. She is the Chairperson of Mohammadi Group, a family business conglomerate whose journey began exporting readymade garments, and has since diversified into software, digital distribution, real estate, power generation and the group’s latest is the launch of a television channel called Nagorik.
Apart from her corporate entity, Mrs. Huq continuing a literary magazine, Monsoon Letters, with Bangladeshi writers since 2006. She having won the SAARC literary award for her poems in 2006. Her first book of poems is titled Time of My Life. She is the former CEO of TV Southasia, a collaborative platform of South Asian electronic media based in Kolkata. She was consecutively featured in BBC 100 women in 2013 and 2014. She setup the Bangladesh chapter of FOSWAL (Foundation of SAARC Writers and Literature) and formed WRITE Foundation, which hosted its SAARC Literary Summit in February 2014. Recently, dated on 25th September,2022, she has been honored with ‘Human Rights Award’ by CNMI Sustainable Fashion Awards-2022 at Milan Fashion Week, Italy.
She represents the global manufacturers in the UNFCCC fashion industry charter for Climate Action for the period of 2021-22.
Dr. Huq holds a PhD in English Literature from Jadavpur University in Kolkata.
She is currently an associate at the Asia Center at Harvard University and an Executive-in-Residence at Stern, New York University.
She is the wife of late Annisul Huq (1952-2017), who was a successful entrepreneur, TV show host, leader; who later elected as the First Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation and served Dhaka bravely till his last breath. Together they have 3 children – a son and two daughters.
